What is the Itrana cultivar?

Itrana is an olive cultivar native to lower Lazio, also known as Oliva di Gaeta. Primarily cultivated in the provinces of Latina and Frosinone, it is a dual-purpose olive (both table olive and oil olive) and takes its name from the village of Itri. It is one of the most representative varieties of southern Lazio: it produces an elegant oil with a medium-intense fruitiness and rich in polyphenols.

Where does Itrana grow?

It prefers the hills of lower Lazio, with a Mediterranean climate and calcareous soils. In Sonnino, in the Agro Pontino, the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea favors the aromatic development of the olives. The cultivar is the same, but each territory leaves its signature: this is why the same oil changes its character from one area to another.

What is the Itrana olive like?

Itrana olives are medium to large in size, elliptical and elongated, and change from intense green to purplish-black when ripe. It is a long-lived and resilient plant, typical of the olive-growing landscape of Pontine.

What kind of oil is obtained from it?

A monocultivar oil with a yellow-green color and a medium-intense fruity aroma, with notes of fresh grass, green tomato, artichoke, and almond. Sweet on the palate, with a delicate bitterness and balanced spiciness: indicators of an oil rich in antioxidants. It is best enjoyed raw.
